Hi Dr. Kamel,
I just got Invisalign Teen over the summer and I am wondering if it is ok to wear them while I play sports? I’m on the school football team, but I also play recreational sports like basketball and soccer in the off season. My coach says I can wear Invisalign instead of a mouth guard, but I don’t know if that’s right. Can you wear Invisalign while playing sports?
First of all, let me be the one to say that I’m glad you’re trying to do your best for your smile! When you play sports like football, soccer, basketball, baseball or even volleyball – there is always a risk of injury. Knowing whether you can wear Invisalign while playing sports, especially full contact sports is a very important question to ask.
Can I Keep My Invisalign Trays in When I Play Sports?
Most patients who live an active lifestyle ask, can I keep my Invisalign trays in when playing sports? During contact sports, I want you to always wear a protective mouth guard. Not only will this help you avoid injury or trauma like broken teeth or busted lips – but it can also help protect you against a concussion.
That being said, it is best to take your Invisalign braces out before you wear the mouth guard. It is best to wear your guard without your Invisalign aligner underneath. That way the guard protects your teeth and lips as best as possible.
Many athletic organizations (including school sports teams) now require that you wear an actual mouth guard during the sport in order to participate. Although Invisalign could seem like they would protect your teeth during athletic activities, they do not provide the level of necessary protection that is fully needed.
One of the best ways you can remember to put your Invisalign in back after a game is to store your Invisalign inside of your mouth guard case. That way as soon as you start or stop playing, you can just switch one out with the other. Then you will never have to worry about forgetting to put your Invisalign back in after you take your athletic guard out.
Logan, I wish you the best of luck this year on the football team! Remember to never wear Invisalign while playing sports instead of a mouth guard. You really need the extra level of protection that a custom guard can give you. They don’t just protect you from broken teeth – they also protect you from things like concussions. Just be sure to put your Invisalign braces back in as soon as the mouth guard comes out, and vice versa.
Feel free to bring your guard by during your next Invisalign check-up at my office for us to make sure it is adequate. Or, if you don’t have a guard, we can help you get one. Staying on top of things like this will help you straighten your smile more quickly!
