Dear Dr. Kamel,
When I went out of town this weekend I misplaced my Invisalign aligner. It was silly, really. We were eating at a restaurant and I sat it on my plate and forgot to get it before we left. I’m worried about my teeth moving back or messing up my orthodontic treatment.
What should I do? I just got back into town last night and wore the aligner from my last set of trays because I don’t have the next one as my checkup is scheduled next week. Is there something that I should do? How much is it going to cost me to get a new Invisalign tray made for this set?
Don’t worry – you’re not the only one this has happened to. After all, accidents happen!
Does Invisalign Replace Trays for Free?
For most Invisalign patients, I’m able to replace their missing tray at no additional charge. In fact, the cost of the treatment has one or two built in replacement trays because of the problem is more common that you might think. We’re able to take the stress of extra charges or fees away by being ready for situations just like this.
Will Missing an Aligner Make My Invisalign Treatment Last Longer?
As far as messing up your Invisalign treatment – obviously replacing an aligner will set us back a couple of weeks compared to your original time frame. I’ll need to get one ordered from Invisalign and have it shipped to the office for you to pick up. In the meantime, please continue wearing your last aligner to prevent replace of your tooth movement.
What If I’m about to Move to the next Set of Invisalign Trays?
Now, let’s say you’re just a couple of days away from moving on to your next set of Invisalign trays. If this is the case, it is ok to go ahead and move forward with wearing your next phase of aligners. But in your case, you obviously didn’t have any new trays because you were due for a follow-up.
That’s ok. We’ll take care of it anyway! Instead of starting with the next set in your new batch of trays, we’ll start over with the one that you lost. It will put you back for two weeks, but in the grand scheme of things that is nothing at all!
No matter how you’ve lost, misplaced, or broken your aligner (even if your dog chewed it up!), replacing your Invisalign trays isn’t something that you need to stress over. The key is to get the replacement ordered as quickly as possible.
Invisalign costs include one or two complimentary replacement aligners, so there is no charge to have a new one made. In the meantime, wear your previous or next set of aligners. If you aren’t sure which one – call my office to find out which is most appropriate based on your current treatment time.
The most important thing you can do for a missing or broken aligner is to call your orthodontist to get it replaced right away. When you call my office, we can usually have a new one delivered in a very short timeframe for you to come by and pick up.
Heather, you’re doing the right thing by wearing your previous aligner until the next set comes in. Thanks for letting me know, so that we can get a replacement one ordered and have you right back on track with your Invisalign treatment.
