I am looking at getting Invisalign but am concerned about the limitations with drinking. Everything says to drink just plain water, but I have never been able to do that, so I use the mio water flavourer and I like the fruit flavoured waters.
There is no suture in these options but I o not know about the acidity, or if there is even enough for it to be an issue if I am brushing several times a day? Do you know if the acid levels in these types of flavourings are problematic when wearing Invisalign?
Although teeth are the hardest parts of our bodies, they do have one weakness: they can be easily destroyed by acid. Acid Wear, also known as Acid Erosion, is the wearing away of the protective enamel on your teeth, often caused by exposure to everyday acidic foods and drinks.
Invisalign Treatment and the Effects of Acidic Foods and Drinks
Enamel is the white, mineral-rich protective outer layer of our teeth and although it is very strong, it can be weakened or softened just by the acids found in our everyday food and drink. Once enamel is weakened, it can more easily wear away, even during regular brushing.
The acidity of substances is measured using the pH scale. The lower the pH a drink has, the more acidic it is. Many common beverages have a low pH, which means that they contain a lot of acid. Our saliva normally has a pH of right around 6.5, which is a healthy pH for the teeth.
When the pH of our mouth gets to 5.5 or below, the enamel on our teeth starts to dissolve. When you drink something that has a pH lower than 5.5, it starts to eat away at your teeth. Many of the flavored waters are found to be as erosive as orange juice with a pH around 3.3.
Beverages, Moderation and Your Invisalign Aligners
Although in most cases moderation is key in keeping enamel healthy, that is not true about Invisalign. Because Invisalign aligners must be worn 22 hours per day, any acid or plaque/bacteria that is trapped between them and your teeth will cause damage to your enamel. Water is truly the only beverage that should be consumed when aligners are being worn.
You can still drink flavored water at meal time, however you must be diligent about brushing your teeth before placing your aligners back inside your mouth. The good news is, the average length of an Invisalign treatment is eleven months. It is a short amount of time to make a few sacrifices in your diet, however the rewards are for a lifetime.
