Dear Dr. Kamel,
My teenage daughter wants to get Invisalign, but I thought they were typically just for adults. The other day, however, I noticed an online ad for something called Invisalign Teen.
Is this option any different from traditional Invisalign? How does it work? I’m interested to see what makes it different from Invisalign and if it might be a good option for my daughter.
Thanks for asking! A lot of parents like you often ask me what the difference is between classic Invisalign and Invisalign Teen. There’s usually a bit of concern over things like effectiveness, getting their teen to wear the appliances, losing aligners, cost, etc.
Basically, Invisalign Teen is nearly identical to Invisalign braces that you or I would wear… but with a few added bonuses making them perfect for our younger patients:
Wear Indicators with Invisalign Braces
Since Invisalign braces are removable, the company had to come up with an idea of how to get teenage patients to “comply” with their treatment. You know how some teenagers can be when it comes to remembering to do certain things.
That’s why Invisalign had to come up with a way to make sure that adolescents were wearing their aligners for at least 20 hours a day, and changing them out appropriately.
To do that, Invisalign made a line of braces that have small “wear indicators” built into the alignment trays. Each one is just a small blue dot that fades over time.
Once it’s gone, it’s time for your teen to change out their trays with the next set. And if you see that the dot isn’t fading – you’ll know they aren’t wearing them for the recommended period of time each day (20+ hours.)
Cost of Invisalign Replacement Trays
Now, let’s say your daughter is going to wear Invisalign for 18 months or so. During that period of time, there’s a good chance that an aligner is simply going to be misplaced, lost, or broken.
It could be during lunch at school, at summer camp, or having it chewed up by the family dog. Whatever it is, Invisalign is ready for accidents.
The cost of Invisalign Teen includes a limited number of replacement aligners during their course of treatment (usually around 6 trays or so.)
That way if something happens, your daughter doesn’t have to start the process all over again. You would simply call my office as soon as you realize the aligner is gone, and we would order a new one.
Oral Hygiene Benefits with Invisalign Teen
Brooke, I can’t tell you just how beneficial it is for my younger patients to wear Invisalign Teen. Oral hygiene and a modified diet are very hard for most teenagers – and I frequently see teens in traditional braces that have “white circles” left on their teeth from poor brushing, or broken appliances because they ate something hard.
With Invisalign Teen, your daughter can keep her teeth healthy because of just how low-maintenance the process actually is. All she has to do is remove her aligners to eat whatever she wants, as well as to thoroughly brush and floss each day.
Invisalign Teen is a great way for teens to straighten their teeth without having to wear conventional braces. Brooke, you’ll love that you can follow up on your daughter’s progress, thanks to the wear indicators on the aligners.
That way you’ll know she’s wearing them as she ought to. Plus, if an aligner is ever lost, you can get up to 6 free replacement aligners just by calling my office. Other than those added bonuses, Invisalign Teen works just the same way as traditional Invisalign!
Brooke, if you’re ready to find out whether or not Invisalign Teen is an option for your daughter, please call my office to set up a no-hassle consult. I’ll be more than happy to answer any questions that you have!
