Hi. Can Invisalign fix an underbite? When I bite my teeth together, my bottom teeth stick out more than my top teeth. It is starting to make my smile look weird, because the bottom teeth are getting chipped and worn. Can Invisalign fix this?
Cody
Hi Cody,
I’m glad you’re taking the initiative to find a way to correct your bite. As you’ve already mentioned, the wear on your bottom front teeth is a result of how your teeth bite down.
If we don’t take steps soon enough, the process will continue. We want to fix that before you need other types of dental treatment, such as crowns or root canals. Can Invisalign fix an underbite? – Yes, it can but it also depends on the type of underbite you have.
For instance, if the lower teeth are jetted out at a slope, Invisalign can be used to bring them back into alignment without much difficulty. This condition is actually known as an “underjet,” and may be the result of habits like mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, or even a previous history of gum disease.
Invisalign invisible teeth-straightening system can fix your underbite and help you achieve the healthy smile you have always wanted.
What about a Severe Underbite?
On the other hand, if you have a severe underbite (anatomical underbite) that is, your jaw being hyperextended or oversized in relationship to your upper jaw – then Invisalign might not work on its own. I would need to assess your jaws and bite relationship before I know for sure.
We would also take an x-ray to evaluate your jaw’s anatomy to determine whether or not additional steps were needed, such as surgery or some type of an orthodontic appliance.
If this is the case, I would work alongside of an oral surgeon to map out where the jaw would need to be repositioned in order to create a healthy, natural bite. Then, we could use Invisalign to straighten the teeth properly into alignment following your procedure.
Conclusion
Cody, Invisalign can be used to fix an underbite but as I mentioned above underbites come in all shapes and sizes. Some are quicker to correct than others. That being said, Invisalign might be perfect for your underbite, or it may be the 2nd phase behind something such as jaw surgery.
Ultimately, the way your teeth are biting together will continue to cause chipping and wear to your bottom front teeth if you don’t take action. Getting an evaluation from a certified Invisalign dentist can give you the answers you’ve been looking for in just one short consultation visit.
