What Are Inlays and Onlays?
Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations used to repair teeth with moderate damage or decay—especially on back molars where strength is essential. They are bonded directly to the tooth and crafted from durable materials like ceramic, porcelain, or composite resin.
- Inlays fit within the grooves of the tooth (between the cusps)
- Onlays cover one or more cusps, often referred to as “partial crowns”
They offer more strength than fillings and require less removal of natural tooth structure than full crowns.

When Are Inlays or Onlays Needed?
You may need an inlay or onlay if:
- A cavity is too large for a standard filling
- Your tooth is cracked but doesn’t need a full crown
- An old filling needs to be replaced with a more durable solution
- You want a strong, aesthetic alternative to metal fillings
We’ll recommend the right option after assessing the health, structure, and function of your tooth.

What to Expect During Treatment
- Examination & Imaging
We evaluate the damage using digital X-rays and 3D imaging to determine if an inlay or onlay is appropriate. - Tooth Preparation
The decayed or damaged portion of the tooth is gently removed and cleaned. - Digital Scanning
We take a precise digital impression and design your custom inlay or onlay using CEREC® software. - Fabrication & Bonding
In the same visit (if CEREC-eligible), we mill the restoration in-house and bond it securely to your tooth. - Polishing & Finishing
We refine the shape and bite to ensure a perfect fit and feel.

We’ll always recommend the most conservative and effective treatment for your situation.

Are inlays and onlays better than fillings?
For larger cavities or areas of wear, yes. They provide better durability, support, and a longer-lasting result.
Do inlays and onlays hurt?
No. The procedure is gentle and done under local anesthetic, just like a filling.
How long do they last?
With proper care, ceramic inlays and onlays can last 10–15 years or more.
Are same-day restorations as strong as lab-made ones?
Yes. CEREC® restorations use high-grade ceramics that match lab-quality standards.
Does insurance cover inlays or onlays?
Most plans cover them as part of restorative treatment. We offer electronic insurance submission and in-house financing.
